How We Started

In 1919, Robert W. Baird helped unite the First National Bank and Wisconsin Trust Company, forming the First Wisconsin Company and establishing operations in downtown Milwaukee. Originally a bond division, the firm grew steadily in both reputation and capability, leading 12 partners to apply for membership on the New York Stock Exchange in 1948. As the business expanded and developed its own identity, it moved beyond the First Wisconsin name and was officially renamed Robert W. Baird & Co. in 1957—an important step that reflected its independence while honoring its founder’s legacy.

Following Mr. Baird’s retirement in 1960, the firm continued to grow, relocating in 1974 to the newly built First Wisconsin Center, which remains its headquarters today. The 1980s marked a period of significant expansion, during which Baird maintained its “clients come first” philosophy and commitment to excellence, captured in its tagline “Better Results from Better Research.”

Since 2004, Baird has consistently been recognized as one of the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For®, reflecting a strong culture built on enduring values and leadership.
